New mosquito species discovered

The entomological team of the Medical Research Institute has succeeded in finding a new species of mosquito increasing the biodiversity of Sri Lanka. The mosquito species has been reported from Mirigama and Kalutara areas of Sri Lanka.

Culex (lephoceraomyia) cintellus Culex cintellus is currently reported from countries such as Thailand and India.

Whether or not this mosquito species is a disease carrier is still under research and has not been reported as a disease carrier in the world.

In addition to this, the same group recently discovered a species of mosquito called Culex niinfula cx.sp near infula belonging to the genus Culex.

That mosquito is very close to the species of mosquito Culex infula that spreads cerebral malaria in India and whether it is a carrier or not in Sri Lanka is still under research and there is a high probability of this being a carrier.
